Music Ministry

The Music Ministry of Nineteenth Street Baptist Church is a transformative artistic expression of worship, dedicated to glorifying God through diverse musical forms. For over 150 years, dating back to 1870, the ministry has been an integral part of the church’s worship experience. It empowers individuals to use their God-given musical talents to lead and inspire. From performing anthems at the White House in 1976 to expanding our repertoire to include gospel and liturgical dance, we’ve continually evolved while maintaining our core mission of bringing spirit-filled music to the congregation and the community.

Our tapestry weaves together gospel harmonies, traditional hymns, soulful spirituals, contemporary praise songs, liturgical dance, and influences from jazz and classical music. Through this rich diversity of sacred sound, the ministry creates powerful worship experiences that reflect the church’s heritage and commitment to musical excellence.

Minister of Music
Kenneth Peagler leads our musical ministries, coordinating and directing multiple choirs and ensembles. He oversees the Mass Choir, Male Chorus, Kandelite Choir, Comfort and Care Choir, and Praise and Worship Team, ensuring each group contributes meaningfully to the church’s worship experience.

Choirs and Ensembles

  • The Mass Choir is our primary ensemble and provides music during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service. The choir’s repertoire blends traditional hymns, gospel, and contemporary sacred music, creating a rich musical landscape. Rehearsals: Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Sundays at 8:30 a.m.
  • The Male Chorus provides musical leadership during 10 a.m. worship services on fifth Sundays, led by Trustee Charles Gordon.
  • The Kandelite Choir is our children’s ensemble. Under the leadership of Deacon Deborah Crain-Kemp, the choir offers young members an opportunity to develop musical skills and contribute to congregational worship.
  • The Praise and Worship Team bridges traditional and contemporary worship styles, creating dynamic musical experiences that engage the entire congregation.

Liturgical Dance

  • The Liturgical Dance Ministry provides dynamic worship through music and movement. It features two units: Women’s Liturgical Dance, with coordinator Sister Jaleya Leonard, and Youth & Young Adult Liturgical Dance, with coordinators Sister Taylor Weldon and Sister Milan Wolfe.
